How to Plan a Fence Before the Estimate
You do not need a contractor’s vocabulary to plan a fence well. Start with what the fence needs to accomplish, then break the property into simple runs and add the decisions that actually change the project.
2. Break the layout into fence runs
Think of each straight section as its own run. A run can have its own fence type, length, gate, beginning and ending condition, and connection to another run.
3. Place gates where you will actually use them
Gate count and width affect both cost and daily convenience. Think about lawn equipment, trash cans, pets, vehicles, pool access, and how people move between the front and back of the property.
4. Account for what is already there
Existing fence removal, trees, landscaping, structures, grade changes, tight access, and connections to neighboring or existing fence can all change the installed scope.
5. Confirm property-specific requirements
Property lines, easements, utility locations, HOA rules, and permit requirements can affect the final layout. Requirements vary by property and jurisdiction, so they should be confirmed for the specific project before installation.
